The role of glycolysis in immune response
AbstractActivation of immune system’s cells is accompanied by metabolic reprogramming, i.e. profound rearrangement of cellular metabolism aimed at fulfillment of increased demands for energy and building blocks for the synthesis of proteins, lipids and nucleic acids. One of the most important metabolic pathways in the cell is glycolysis. In this review, we present data about the role of glycolysis and particular glycolytic enzymes in innate and adaptive immune response. We also consider the possibility to modulate immune response by altering metabolism of cells of the immune system, in particular glycolysis.
